About ATI

The Academy of Thought and Industry high school network, founded by Michael Strong, is now enrolling at our three campuses, each centered in high-tech hubs: San Francisco (pictured), Austin, and New York City. Learn more about our story.

Meet Michael Strong, founder of the Academy of Thought and Industry high school network.

The ATI program has been designed by Michael Strong, one of the most experienced designers of innovative school programs in the U.S. His projects include Montessori secondary school program design at The Judson Montessori School (San Antonio), The Emerson School (Palo Alto), and Hacienda School (Pleasanton). He also created The Winston Academy, where middle school students passed AP exams. Another of Michael's projects, Moreno Valley High School, a Paideia charter high school in Angel Fire, New Mexico, was ranked the 36th best public high school in the U.S. by Newsweek in its 3rd year of operation and continued to outperform other New Mexico high schools thereafter.

More recently he co-founded KoSchool in Austin, Texas, which combines his high-performance approach to AP coursework and SAT score gains with a focus on entrepreneurial and creative projects. ATI is a “next-generation” version of the stellar program at KoSchool. Graduates of Michael’s schools have matriculated and succeeded at dozens of universities, including Stanford, Harvard, Parsons School of Design, Reed, St. John’s College, Hebrew University, Southwestern University, Texas Christian University, and many others. They have also launched successful businesses, including in areas of software, aquaponics, and concert promotions. Watch one of Michael's most popular TEDx talks here.

More than anything we need schools based on love. We need schools where people passionately love what they are doing, love what they are teaching, love what they are learning, where love is the essential element in interactions between students, teachers, and parents, and where everyone is joined by a passionate vision of excellence and human flourishing.

ATI San Francisco occupies a beautiful four-story former residence on Jackson Street in scenic Pacific Heights, across the street from Alta Plaza Park. Our campus provides an ideal setting for a rich urban education. The school is easily accessed by city transit, and the nearby park provides the perfect space for regular physical activity. The newly remodeled facility is designed to capture the feel of a state-of-the-art co-working space, with truly spectacular 360-degree views of the city, the Bay, and the Pacific Ocean. ATI's campus combines the comfort of a family home with the professional feel of a well-managed entrepreneurial incubator—the sort of space that adults and teens alike are delighted to work in.

A high school for teens who want to excel on their own terms.

In the right learning environment, high school students are capable of much more than conventional education permits them to achieve. Teens that choose ATI are ready for responsibility and able to take ownership over their own education in a way that the control mechanisms of typical schooling make virtually impossible.

If the average high school experience just doesn't inspire your teen, consider the Academy of Thought and Industry. We're looking forward to connecting with you and answering all of your questions.
